Unclaimed Property

SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Unclaimed property could be waiting for you and you just don’t know it! What if I told you I have found money that might belong to you? Would you be excited I gave you this news? I wanted to share this with you and if you like this information, be sure to click the share/social media links on this page ( < — those pretty buttons on the left ). This isn't just in Arizona, but in all states and provinces!

Going through some old files, my husband found a VERY small uncashed check from the Arizona Department of Revenue dated in 2009. The check was now void due to not cashing it in time so I decided to contact the Arizona Department of Revenue to see if the money was still available for us to collect.

In my case, the Arizona Department of Revenue employee directed me to azdor.gov to begin my search (see steps below). In our phone conversation, she walked me through the website and the steps to follow as I was on the computer. Eureka! I found our gold! VERY SMALL GOLD, but I'm not the kind to leave money on the sidewalk. Are you??? :D

While looking for our names, I POSSIBLY FOUND UNCLAIMED PROPERTY FOR FOUR OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS AND A FRIEND! Wow!! I'm so excited I get to pass along this great news!

According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), there is over $40 BILLION in UNCLAIMED PROPERTY waiting to be returned by state unclaimed property programs. In 2011 alone $2.25 billion was returned.

What is Unclaimed Property?

Unclaimed property are accounts held by financial institutions and companies that may have not had any activity or contact with the property owner within one year or longer. Sometimes unclaimed property is also referred to as abandoned.

Many states have websites to conduct free searches. Be careful with websites you have to pay a fee to do a search or to collect your unclaimed property. They might be legit, but I just want to you to be safe. Once you have found your potential unclaimed property, see if you can go directly to where the unclaimed property is being held and verify the steps required to file a claim. In my case, I had to file form 600A located on Arizona’s unclaimed property website.

You’ll want to check out National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators page for Fast Facts about Unclaimed Property for some great information.

10 Steps To Look For And Claim Unclaimed Property

The steps I took to find my unclaimed property with the Arizona Department of Revenue:

  1. Go to http://azdor.gov.
  2. Click “Unclaimed Property” in the left sidebar. This directed me to Arizona’s unclaimed property website http://www.azunclaimed.gov/.
  3. In the left sidebar, click “Search For Property” under “Owners – To File A Claim”.
  4. In the right sidebar, enter last name and first name (optional) under “Search for Unclaimed Property” and hit the enter key. This directed me to my search results on another website http://missingmoney.com.
  5. If you see something that might belong to you, click on the name. This directed me to a page that had the detailed information I needed such as the state property ID number and where the property was being held.
  6. Return to http://www.azunclaimed.gov/. In the left sidebar, click “Forms” under “Owners – To File A Claim”.
  7. Click “View Form” next to “Claim Form for Unclaimed Property (AZ600)
  8. Read and select one option from the choices in order to get the right form. I selected option 4.
  9. Print form and instructions, complete and mail in to the address at the bottom of the form or where directed if the instructions state.
  10. That’s it! Happy money hunting!!
